Meet Shannon

Shannon Matthews

I am a Nova Scotian, born and raised, with extensive experience living in and traveling across various Canadian provinces, as well as South Korea and Japan. Music has been a significant part of my life since I started learning at the age of 7.

When I'm not teaching or playing music, I enjoy gardening, reading, playing video games, teaching literacy, and spending time with my cats and children. I also love trekking through the woods and relaxing at the beach.

Music has always been a central part of my life. I learned to speak through song and was deeply involved in my church choir, school bands, and music studies through the Royal Conservatory. In my teens, I participated in a jazz band, performed at coffee houses, and played keyboards in friends’ bands. As a young adult attending university, I managed a church choir for several years and continued my Royal Conservatory education. While my children were young, I worked as a piano and guitar instructor at a local music studio for five years.

I earned both my undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Developmental Psychology, focusing on how typically developing and developmentally delayed children learn. In my roles as an Applied Behavioural Analyst and Skills teacher for learning-disabled and developmentally delayed children, I frequently incorporated music into my teaching to enhance engagement and motivation.

Music has always been a strong passion of mine, and I am excited about the opportunity to help others build that connection through individual and group lessons. It brings me immense joy to see others find peace and connection through music.

 Warm regards,
Shannon Matthews
